It’s a Spy’s Life, Part 5

It’s a Spy’s Life

By: Liz Davidson

This a chapter-by-chapter story about a 16-year-old spy, Angela Darkmoon, as she finds her way in the mixed-up, topsy-turvy world she lives in.

Part 5

As Angela stopped in her tracks, and the whole crowd stopped talking. She was shocked, no one had every asked her that before. She just shook her head, fighting some tears and opened her mouth to say something. Nothing came out; her throat had closed. So she shut it and continued walking, shaking her head.

“What did they want this time,” Nate asked at the sidewalk, handing her a cup of Starbucks coffee.

“Oh, they had questions about the body that was found yesterday,” she commented, talking into her cup before taking a sip of her coffee.

“What was that socked look you had though,” Jasper asked walking up to his two coworkers. Angela mumbled into her cup.

“What was that? I couldn’t hear you?” Nate taunted. Angela whacked his arm.  “Owe,” he replied, rubbing his it.

“I don’t think she wants us to know,” Jasper whispered to Nate. Angela rolled her eyes and kept walking.

“We’ll find out sooner or later! You can run but you can’t hide!” Jasper yelled after her. Angela mock-saluted him as she kept walking, occasionally taking a sip of her coffee. Not once did she look back to see his reaction.

“Hey, Angel!” someone exclaimed, bouncing up to her.

“Hey, Nali. Ready to get back to work in your lab?” Angela asked her co-worker. Nali Brieghton worked as the Forensic Criminalist who loved cosplay, bunnies, sweets, and the Jim Howard drink.

“Nali, could you tell me again what’s in a Jim Howard,” the teen asked, taking another sip of coffee.

“A Jim Howard is a non-alcoholic beverage that is comprised of Sprite and orange juice. It named by a group of Imagineers while they were working on different projects at Walt Disney World,” Nali rattled off as if this was the hundredth time she had to explain what her favorite drink was. Angela hid a laugh. Nali was called the encyclopedia of the agency for a reason.

“Hey, Nali there’s a present waiting down for you in your lab,” Jonathon said, joining the two as they head into the lobby.

“Oh, a present. Let me guess, from Angela’s John Doe from yesterday.”

“Yep, and I made sure that all of the Crime-scene investigators got everything they could bag, slide, or pull up.”

“Yay! I love presents,” Nali declared, starting to skip to the elevator.

“I always wondered how Nali could be twenty-four and get away with acting like a twelve-year-old,” Angela wondered aloud, continuing to walk the path to her desk.

“Don’t ask me. I don’t have the answer you’re looking for,” her boss said as he followed her, “I want you to go ask Jake what he has for us about the man you found.” Angela nodded and walked to the elevator. She pushed the button and got in as soon as the doors opened.
