Senior Carli Thornton

The Atlantic girl’s tennis team hosted the Clarinda Cardinals on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon.  The Trojanns defeated Clarinda 5-1.  Coach Shawn Petersen said, “This was a great win for the girls — Clarinda is one of the few teams we will see with our senior depth, and it was really tough conditions.”  As the girls prepared for their doubles’ matches, rain started to fall from the sky. Both coaches decided to suspend play.

Number one, senior Liz Metheny trailed 5-4, but came back winning the final four games to defeat Senior Beth Reiter of Clarinda. Number two, senior Shelby Svoboda had similar results.  Svoboda was down early but held the serve coming back to win.  At number three, senior Carli Thornton was down early two to nothing, before winning three straight games. The senior went on to win 8-6.  Seniors Morgan Allen and Sarah Schreiner cruised to easy victories.  Senior Tierney Kamies found herself unable to gain advantage of the talented Cardinal sophomore, losing 8-4.

The Trojanns are now 3-1 on the season.
