What I Think Is Overrated in Pop Culture.

The word overrated is used a lot in pop culture. But is it used enough? There are times when pop culture needs a kick in the butt. There are so many actors, movies, video games, and Internet memes that seriously need to go. So here is what I think is overrated.

First-Person Shooters – Okay, I don’t want to be a hypocrite. I play these games; they are fun to play. However, what bugs me the most is how over-hyped they are. They are all the same in terms of gameplay. You run, aim, shoot, melee, throw grenade, operate machines and do it all over again. One of the things that makes a game great is variety, not just in weapons, setting, or timeline, but in the gameplay itself.

Many people buy the FPS strictly for the multiplayer game. Sure, there are other features, but think of how much you play those. It’s kinda sad that these games get so much hype when it’s just their multiplayer and nobody cares about the story mode. So FPS is overrated but still fun to play.

Lady Gaga – While I don’t listen to Lady Gaga, never has there been a more attention-seeking celebrity (other than Sarah Palin). I realize that Gaga’s costumes are her gimmick, but the meat dress is a little overboard.  I just hope she wasn’t planning to have it for dinner later on.

Justin Bieber Jokes – Yes, I make these jokes too, but rarely. I realize Justin Bieber is just like those overrated Disney stars that think they can sing but can’t. But you can’t look in the comments in a music video without seeing a Justin Bieber joke—the song doesn’t even have to have anything to do with guy. It has become really overrated no matter how bad the guy is.  If you are going to make a Justin Bieber joke, at least make it good.

Twilight and everything related to it. Why do people think this is a good franchise? The books are horribly written, the acting is bland, the entire concept came from Stephanie Meyers’ fantasy, the romance is stupid and forced. I mean I respect people’s opinion, but this is a message to obsessive girls: Edward Cullen is an abusive emo stalker and thinks he is a monster when he is not. So don’t act like he is the new messiah. You want to know what is the worst? Twilight ruins the vampire genre. I mean come on, they don’t have fangs, they SPARKLE, and worst of all, they are BORING.  Give me Dracula, Blade, or Alucard from “Hellsing” any day over these guys.  To get to the point, this series is the epitome of overrated.

3-D movies. This is just another marketing gimmick to get us to pay more when it doesn’t make a movie any more enjoyable–especially a bad movie. Plus the glasses half the time feel just gross. 3-D may have worked in horror movies, a few scenes in Avatar, and the entire Polar Express movie, but for the most part it just wastes our money.

Other things. There are other things overrated: American Idol, Survivor, Jersey Shore, Sarah Palin, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Kesha and a whole lot more that I will get to some other time. But for right now, this is what I think, and I will stick to it.
