First Half of Swim Team Season Recap

First+Half+of+Swim+Team+Season+Recap

The boys on swim team have made a great improvement over the course of three months of excessive training and multiple meets. The boys last meet was Dec. 17, and overall they were pretty remarkable. It was held in Boone and they faced not only Boone, but Carroll as well.  Atlantic placed second behind Boone by four points; although coach Dean Junker thought they should have won the meet. Just a half of a second in a relay determined whether Atlantic would get first or second but it was a great race and was a good learning experience for the team.

Sophomore Cody McCreedy swam the 200m and the 500m at the meet and got fourth and second.  Over Christmas break the boys were practicing extremely hard only getting a few days off including Christmas and Sundays.  They practiced two times a day for three hours. One of the things the team focused on most was just continuing to get in better shape. In one day they would swim six to eight thousand yards. Some other things that were worked on was push-offs and kicking. Coach Junker really stressed to the boys to not just going through the motions but get a workout out of it, also, not giving it all their effort. To be successful they need to really push themselves to get better and get a solid workout in. McCreedy said he really wants to improve on his strokes and his turns so that he can keep up with the more advanced swimmers. McCreedy has made many improvements this season already and is striving to get better every practice.
The boys are conditioning until the most important meets hoping to make it to state in as many events as they can.  They have many areas that they can improve in but they do have time to correct those before the meets.  The boys swim team had a meet January 14, at the YMCA with Abraham Lincoln and placed first.  Their next meet is Jan 23 in Lewis Central.
