The Atlantic Community School District held a board meeting on Monday, Nov. 10. The meeting included special presentations from AHS band director Jarrod O’Donnell and freshman English teacher Stephanie Graham.

O’Donnell introduced sophomore Nadia Somers to the board members. She played the third movement of Mozart’s Concerto No. 3 in E Flat Major for the board. This is the same piece that she auditioned with for All-State. She also played three etudes by Max P. Pottag. Somers said, “I enjoyed having the opportunity to play for the board members and show them the audition process.”

Somers was accepted into the All-State Orchestra with her french horn audition. “After the list dropped saying who made it, I received new music which I will play with the orchestra,” said Somers.

Graham also presented progress to the board. She explained how she has been using technology in the classroom, especially with her Honors English 9 class. Student created videos were presented by Graham that featured various students in her Honors English 9 class.

Graham said she gave her other English students a different assignment, the New York Times vocabulary video contest. Her students found a unique word, it’s part of speech, and it’s definition, and then acted out how to use it in a short video. The students were allowed to anonymously submit their creations to the New York Times video contest.

Graham said, “I have been so impressed with their enthusiasm, their writing, and their responses. They are doing very, very well, enjoying technology in the district, and learning along the way!”
