School Board Makes Big Approvals

School+Board+Makes+Big+Approvals

By Turner Russell

All students at AHS will have their own laptops next year, after the Atlantic School board voted Mon. Apr. 14, to approve the 1-to-1 initiative. The board also reduced the minimum of required credits for graduation from 52 to 48 and accepted 12 early-retirement applications from district teachers.

The reduction of credits will give students the opportunity to have one fewer elective class and still graduate. Several AHS staff assured the board members that lowering the required credits would not diminish the success of Atlantic’s advanced placement (AP) classes. A majority of the board members voted in favor of reducing the minimum credits. The change will take place next year.

The board next addressed the highly anticipated 1-to-1 laptops for the high school next year. The high school will be receiving Macbook Airs from a lease program through Apple.

The board also revealed that there are a total of 12 teachers from the district retiring this year. Many of the retirements will be a result of the early retirement program that was approved at the last board meeting.
