AHS is spreading joy this holiday season

Seniors Tess Dusenberry, Sam Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Kari Sandage and Trevor Knuth, and English teacher Allison Berryhill show their evergreen spirit.

By Alyssa Askeland

Each year around Christmas, the AHS Student Council invites the Primetimes to “adopt” a family in need from the community.  Tess Dusenberry, Student Council vice president, called the Head Start office and asked for a list of families who cannot afford to buy their child Christmas presents. “It think it is a good thing,” says science teacher Nancy Jenkins. “There are a lot of families out there who need and greatly appreciate this help at Christmas time.”

Last year the Student Council had a hard time getting a list of families who needed help, but this year the Student Council is working hard with the Primetimes to make this year special for all families in the community. Dusenberry said, “It is a great way to help kids who will not receive much for Christmas.”

Most students around the school would agree that this is a project that should definitely be done. Sophomore Harrison Hoegh said that he would feel great if his parents couldn’t afford presents this holiday season and he woke and found presents under his tree Christmas morning.  That statement is true is many families in Atlantic, Iowa, but some aren’t lucky enough to be adopted.

In art teacher Pat Wiederien’s Primetime, the students have adopted family of four with two little boys.  The students will bring money and pick items from a list of gifts that Wiederien will then go buy.  “Not only is our Primetime adopting family four,” said sophomore Dalton Franken, “we are also sending holiday cards to Wieda’s son’s battalion over in Afghanistan.”  The students have made over 60 cards to send to the troops in the second Battalion stationed over seas.

It always enriches lives when we think of others. How uplifting to read about a student activity that shows our students not only care, but they also take action.
