By Savannah Sorensen

Last Tuesday, the girls track team kicked off their season with their first outdoor track meet in Clarinda. Atlantic girls placed seventh out of seven teams with a score of 34 points, Glenwood won the meet with 198 points.

The Trojans best finishes were freshman Stephanie Sandbothe who placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of :17.68, sophomore Tiffany Williams who placed third in the 400 meter dash with a time of :65.75, and junior Karly Monson who finished third in the 3000 meter run with a time of 12:58.75.

Sandbothe said, “I feel I could’ve done better. I don’t think I was as warmed up for my other events other than the hurdles.”

The 4×800 meter relay team which consisted of Williams, freshmen Alexis Brockman and Lexi Freund, and junior Savannah Sorensen placed fifth with a time of 11:31.06. Finishing fifth with a time of 1:31.81, the shuttle hurdle relay team that consisted of sophomore Laeni Pelzer, freshmen Kerra Christensen and Bailey Schildberg, and junior Mollee Welter. Monson also finished in fifth place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:48. Williams finished in fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of :75.36.

Head coach Paul Iekel said, “I was bummed, disappointed. I’m still seeing PR’s (personal records), but we’re not improving enough for competition. We need to be determined as a group to compete with others.”

On the throwing side, senior Tetta Askeland set a new personal record in the shot put with a throw of 30”4’. Sophomore Meghan Reilly also set a new personal record in the shot put with a throw of 23”2’. In the discus, Askeland placed 6th with a throw of 90”10’.

Askeland said, “It was definitely a good starting point, and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

Iekel said, “We need to be able to score some points in field events. Racing times need to be faster than practice times. Some of the new runners with not much experience showed some strength.”

According to Iekel, some key highlights included Monson in the 800 meter run, freshman Olivia Davis had “good sprints”, and Askeland PR’d in the shot put. Iekel said, “We ran steady, where I thought we’d place 3rd or 4th, we placed 5th or 6th.”

The girls track team as back in action on Friday in Denison for a co-ed meet that began at 4:30 p.m.
