Spaghetti Supper

Spaghetti+Supper

By Monica Brewer

On Mon. Feb. 10, was the annual Spaghetti Supper, a band tradition that has been going on for over 30 years.  Band students from Atlantic High School and Middle School participated in this long standing tradition.  Over the years, it has gone on without a hitch and managed to raise a lot of money for students for trips.

“The purpose of the Spaghetti Supper is to raise funds for trips,” said band teacher Jarrod O’Donnell.  The Spaghetti Supper funds was previously used for a big trip every four years.  The last big trip that the students went on was to DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida, in 2012.  Now students have an opportunity to use the money that was raised and use it for the big trip to Chicago during spring break of this year (2014).

There was a lot of great people that worked the supper.  Junior Ben Parker worked the second shift during the supper because he said that wanted to work with his friends. Among the people who worked the first shift was Senior Valerie Watson, Sophomore Lydia Joseph, and Freshman Megan Behrends.  Watson wanted the opportunity so she “could be done in time to go home and do homework.”  Joseph and Behrends did it so they could eat the spaghetti they get after working their shift.

What was the payoff of the supper?  The total of how many tickets that were sold was over 2,000 (pre sale & at the door).  O’donnell was happy with the result of the supper.  “I thought it went very well.  DeeAnn Schreiner is amazing.” Watson said, “ I felt like it went really well and that everyone had a job to do and was getting it done.”  Behrends commented that it was successful because “more people came” than last year.  After paying off the food cost with Schreiner, O’donnell hopes to make $7,000.

The Spaghetti Supper makes so many good memories with the band students.  With this being her last year to work at the supper, Watson’s favorite memory was “the Spaghetti Supper that we had for Ragbrai.”  Parker’s favorite experience “is learning more about the people in the community while you are serving them food.”  Joseph’s favorite experience is “eating the food and pie” after you work your shift.

With this year’s Spaghetti Supper being successful, everyone hopes that next year’s supper will turn out even better.  The next big trip isn’t until the summer of 2016, so the current sophomores and freshmen have at least two years to make more money for the next big trip.
