Trojans Split on the Last Dual

Trojans Split on the Last Dual

By Savannah Sorensen

The Trojan wrestlers fell short Thursday evening, Jan. 30,  going one and one at the triangular meet held at Lewis Central High School. With four varsity wrestlers out because of illness or injury, JV wrestlers had to fill in. The team came out strong defeating Red Oak (46-30); however, they fell short to Lewis Central (51-22).

Seniors Dillion Cox, Darrian Schwenke and Tyler Christensen, and sophomore Keagan Hosfelt went 2-0 on the night, with Christensen receiving a forfeit against Lewis Central. Missing wrestlers included juniors Marshal McDermott and Austin Williamson, and freshmen Carter Cox and Zac Stork. Junior Travis Petersen injury defaulted in the first dual.

Having to put a couple JV wrestlers in the varsity line up at the last minute, assistant coach Drew Duff said, “You never like putting them in that position, but they have to be ready to step on the mat and be ready to win. I thought our JV guys did decent with a different setting and a new experience.”

One of the three JV wrestlers included freshman Nate Moen. Moen said, “I was nervous because I saw how jacked he was. I just went out and tried my best and tried not to get pinned.”

Despite being defeated in the last dual of season, Duff said, “You never want to lose the last dual. Just have to start focusing on individuals and the individual tournaments.”

With last dual of the 2013-14 wrestling season in the books, wrestlers turn their focus to qualifying for the state tournament in February.
