Proyecto de Coche Español

By Miranda Olson

A car project in Spanish is just what the Spanish 3 students are doing this week.  This project was created to “give the students a hands on opportunity to learn the language instead of just writing the vocabulary out,” according to Spanish teacher Dan Vargason.

A week before the project was started, students reviewed commands and were given a vocabulary list involving numerous different parts of a car.  The following Friday, students were divided into their rows and given a handout with the requirements for their car.  Each groups car is required to have ten different parts, and instruction manual on how they made it, step by step, using commands.  Three points of extra credit could also be received if the car is able to move five yards.

Students were told to bring materials for the class period on Monday to work and begin building the basis of their cars.  Some popular materials amongst the students include balloons, popsicle sticks, straws, and hot glue to hold it all together.  Junior Erin Shannon said, “I think it’s a fun idea, although writing the manual is a challenge.”

Junior Adam Freund is in a group with Stephanie Freund and Ashleigh Waltz.  Freund described their car as “a red box with lego wheels and a straw going through it for the balloon.”  Stephanie came up with the idea late Monday night.

Junior Tori Bruck is in Spanish 3 fourth period and is in a group with Erin Shannon, Joey Walker, and Haley Schweigart.  Bruck’s car is a “long rectangular white box, with numerous sticker designs, bedazzled with pink jewels and tires made out of bobbins.”  The group’s car will also be powered via balloon.

The cars will be due before the beginning of class on Friday, and then will be tested during class.
