Wrestling Senior Night

Wrestling+Senior+Night

By Savannah Sorensen and Laeni Pelzer

The six Trojan wrestling seniors had a snazzy night Tuesday evening as they had their last home dual as a Trojan wrestler. The varsity squad went 2-0 on the night defeating Denison-Schleswig (70-12) and Harlan (47-24) and improving their dual record to 15-8.

The six seniors include Tyler Christensen, Dillion Cox, Jacob Johnson, Jez Phippen,  Darrian Schwenke, and Tyler Ross. Head coach Tim Duff said, “It was a nice Senior night for the six seniors.  They have been consistent performers for us all season.”   He continued with saying, “I thought we wrestled well in both duals and we were able to score bonus points in matches where we had chances, and for the most part we did not give up many bonus points.  Tyler had a nice win over a tough opponent that was big for him and the team.”

As the season winds down and the seniors wrap up their last few times wrestling as Atlantic Trojans, they all had comments about their wrestling experiences.

Christensen has participated in wrestling for the past 14 years.  He said his biggest accomplishment so far is winning three tournament titles.  His favorite memory is having Dillion as a roommate sophomore year at state duals. Christensen’s  advice to the incoming wrestlers and underclassmen is, “Don’t be a ‘would’ve’ brother.”  Christensen believes that wrestling has made everything else in his life easier, and the one lesson he will take away from wrestling  is “mind over matter.”

Cox has participated in wrestling for 14 years and his biggest accomplishment so far is qualifying for state. His favorite memory is “pinning Broghan Kelly at districts,” his junior year. His advice to the incoming wrestlers and underclassmen is “work hard and keep a bull-headed mind set.” One thing Cox will take from wrestling is “the only thing you deserve is what you earn.”

Johnson has participated in wrestling for six years and his biggest accomplishment is winning the Rollin Dyer Tournament both as a team and individually. His favorite memory is state duals sophomore year. His advice to the incoming wrestlers and underclassmen is to “stay mentally tough.” Johnson believes that wrestling has shaped him into a different young man and one thing he will take away is knowing that if you can tell yourself you can do it then no one can stop you.

Phippen has participated in wrestling for seven years and says his biggest accomplishment is getting to districts his junior year. His favorite memory is driving up to state last year. Phippen’s advice to underclassmen and upcoming wrestlers is, “No matter how hard it is, push through it. Look back and be glad you did it.” Phippen says that when he gets into a tough situation he will be able to look back and realize that he “survived wrestling.” One thing he will take away is that you have to keep pushing through because “everything has to end at one point.”

Schwenke has participated in wrestling for 13 years. His biggest accomplishment and favorite memory has been, “placing at state, with the biggest one still yet to come of winning state.” His advice to underclassmen is to really put in extra work during the off season because it will pay off. Schwenke believes that wrestling has helped him be able to set goals and achieve them, and it makes everything else in life easier. He is going to take away that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Ross is participating in wrestling for the first time this year. His biggest accomplishment has been being able to score some takedowns. Advice to underclassmen is to listen to the coach, not to make a lot of mistakes, and keep on practicing to hope and get better. Ross believes that wrestling has maked him better and helped him strive more to achieve. He is going to take the experience of wrestling and use it later in life.

The seniors all have four meets left not including districts and state which they will have to qualify for.
