Recruiting is a big deal in high school for senior athletes. Recruiting is where they have a sports scout from a college attend a game and watch the athlete play. The game is usually followed by a short interview with the recruiter asking questions. The interview consists of finding out what the athlete likes about the sport and why they would like to pursue it in college.
Senior Bailey Walter, volleyball and golf player, had the chance to have a recruiter come watch her in volleyball recently. “I was excited, when I was talking to the recruiter,” said Walter.
Walter was also named the athlete of week in Atlantic News Telegraph. She has also made it to state golf three years in a row. Walter will be attending Ellsworth college and will be playing volleyball and golf.
Some of AHS faculty have been recruited, including Coach Nick Ross and Assistant Coach Bryan Woods. Coach Ross was recruited by Drake and South Dakota. He said the process was tough because the colleges try to get the best players that they can. Ross said that you should pick the college based on academics and visit multiple schools.
Woods was looked at in high school by many colleges such as, Wartburg, Hamline, UNI, Co Central, BU, and UNO. Woods said his favorite part of the game was playing with teammates and being with friends. Woods said, “Go to the school that offers both academics and athletics, because without academics nothing else matters.”
