Loess Hills Band Competition

Loess+Hills+Band+Competition

By Monica Brewer

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Atlantic High School Marching Band will travel to Glenwood for its second marching band contest of the year.  This is the first year going to the  Loess Hills Fieldfest .  Atlantic High School Marching Band has gone to Glenwood since the 1950s for State Marching Band, but has never been involved in this particular competition.

AHS Band Teacher Jarrod O’donnell said that he is looking forward to it.  O’donnell is also hoping that he will see “great marching” from the band.  Junior flute player Alex Lensch says that she is hoping to “do better at this contest than our last one.”

The band will leave at 9:30 a.m.,  and will arrive at Glenwood around 11:00 a.m. As soon as they arrive, they will get dressed in their uniforms and unload equipment and instruments. The band will perform at approximately 1:00 p.m., depending on the weather and the length of other schools’ performances.  Including AHS, there will be 13 schools performing.  The Atlantic Marching Band will be playing their 2013 John Williams show, which includes songs such as the Superman Theme and Star Wars’ Raider March.

This contest is replacing the Valleyfest competition that the band has been a part of for the past few years. O’donnell stated that the reason for the switch is that there are only a small amount of members travelling to the competition, and he wanted to work on more fundamentals. Many of the band members are disappointed about the switch. Senior tenor sax player Logan Hemphill was looking forward to going to Valleyfest because of “all of the other things I had heard from other classmates”. Sophomore trombone player Seth Schulte says that the thing he’ll miss the laser tag at Valleyfest.
