Glenwood outlasts Trojanns

by Anthony Robinson

The Atlantic Trojanns opened up Hawkeye 10 conference play Friday night against the Glenwood Rams.  The Trojanns were unable to stop the balanced attack of the Rams.  “They have a lot of size inside, and an experienced point guard,” Coach Casey Pelzer commented.  The Trojanns were defeated 44-56.

With the loss the Trojanns dropped to 0-1 in the Hawkeye 10 and 0-3 overall.

The Rams showed their scoring abilities from the start.  Only eight seconds after the opening tip, 6’3″ junior Morgan Lucy scored the opening basket for the Rams.  Lucy paced the Rams with 14 points in the game.

During the opening quarter senior guard Jessica Arneson hit three three-point field goals.  At the end of the first, sharp-shooting Arneson had 11 of the Trojanns 13 points.  The Trojanns led 13-12 heading into the second quarter.

To close out the half, the Rams outscored the Trojanns 12-6 to take a 24-19 lead into the halftime break.

To start the second half, Glenwood opened up on an eight-to-three run to extend their lead to 32-22.  After a Trojann timeout, senior forward Taylor Young scored four points to cut the Rams’ lead to six.  During the third quarter the Trojanns’ size disadvantage was evident.  Glenwood was able to control the boards and take a 14-point lead into the final quarter (48-34).  “(Rebounding) will be our challenge all year .  It was quite a battle on the boards,” Pelzer said.

The fourth and final quarter saw both teams struggle from the field.  The Trojanns switched to a full-court press to minimize the Rams’ ability to extend their lead.   The Trojanns outscored the Rams 10-8 in the fourth quarter.

“We started out a little sluggish defensively.  Overall they played extremely well,” Coach Pelzer noted.

The Trojanns were led by three players in double figures.  Young finished with 12 points, Arneson with 11, and junior point guard Paige Kennon had 11.

The Trojanns travel to Red Oak Tuesday, Dec. 7, for a non-conference game against the Tigers.
