How Much Fun Is Too Much Fun? Rules for Student Section Clarified

How+Much+Fun+Is+Too+Much+Fun%3F+Rules+for+Student+Section+Clarified

By Travis Small and Bailey Walter

The Atlantic High School student section is making some noise this year. Students say the spirit is high and they have been having a lot of fun. Principal Heather Mckay said that AHS student section is overall really positive. But some behaviors are not allowed in the student section. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) assistant executive director Todd Tharp provided AHSneedle with clarification on the rules.

At previous games the students have been warned about bringing noisemakers. Noise-makers such as party blowers and plastic megaphones are not allowed at the games, said Tharp. The cheerleaders are the only ones who are allowed to use plastic megaphones to project their voices. Also in question are beach balls, confetti cannons, and silly string. According to Tharp any object or material that lands on the field may result in penalties for delay of game.

AHS students have brought beach balls to previous games, and once they hit the track they were taken away or popped. According to AHS principal Heather McKay, beach balls are not allowed at any more of the games. Confetti cannons have made appearances at games as well resulting in curiosity towards their legality.  Confetti cannons are allowed at football games, said McKay. However, students are asked to shoot them backwards, towards the student section, instead of toward the field.  McKay also warned that Silly String is not allowed as a safety precaution.  Once the Silly String is sprayed, the bleachers become slick and could possibly cause students and other fans to slip.  Mckay also said the string is very messy. The students are allowed to make the games fun, said McKay, as long as the behavior does not result in a penalty, and reminded students that the ultimate goal is their safety.

Another issue to arise in the student section is the broken bleachers. Some of the bleachers, including the front row, are very unstable and unsafe.  McKay has asked that students no longer stand on the bleachers and instead take one step backwards and stand below on the floorboards to prevent further damage.
