Atlantic High School’s Homecoming week started with float building on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 1-5 p.m. Each day since then, building has been 6-8 p.m., excluding Wednesday Sept. 25, when building from 4-8 p.m. On Thursday the building is from 3:30-6 p.m. with judging following at 6:30 p.m. Every student who attends  will receive one spirit point counted towards to his/her grade’s total.

Each grade voted on their theme during class meetings on Wednesday, Sept. 18.  They also decided the location for building their floats. Freshmen are building their “Muzzle the Monarchs” float at the Atlantic Fire Department.  Sophomores are building their float at the home of sophomore Sarah McCance with the theme “Monarch Kyriptonite.”  Juniors are building at John Becker’s Pioneer warehouse with their float called “Wreck the Monarchs.”  Seniors are building at senior Preston Hoye’s house with “The Adventures of the Trojan Heroes” theme. Each class is given 50 dollars to create their Homecoming float.

Floats will be judged following the Thursday building time. Floats must coincide with the Hometown Heroes homecoming theme and all of the grades are to have add their own spin to their floats.  Spirit points are awarded according to the judges’ final scores.

When asked about past float building years, senior Darrian Schwenke said, “Everybody was really excited” to build the float and ride in the parade.  Junior Miranda Olson said, “I had fun with it. Hannah, Steph and I decorated together and had a lot of fun.”  Sophomore Emily McDermott’s said, “I like to mess around but is serious at the same time.”

Float building is a great way to bond with classmates. Students are encouraged to support Atlantic High School’s Homecoming week.
