Soup’s On!

by Sierra Smith

Friday, Aug. 23, Atlantic High School football players will participate in the annual Soup Scrimmage.  Multiple inner-squad teams will play two games on the high school football field that night.  The first scrimmage, between freshman and sophomore players, kicks off at 6:45 p.m. The returning varsity players will start the second scrimmage shortly after at 7:30 p.m.

The Soup Scrimmage is one of the first events Atlantic High School hosts every school year.  It gives the football players the chance to prove to their coaches where they fit on the team and to show their fellow classmates what they’ve been doing since practices started.  The Soup Scrimmage is also a way to support Atlantic’s local food drive.  The cost to get into the game is can of soup or other non-perishable food item.  All items collected will be donated.  Junior Reid Nichols said, “This is a great opportunity to come out and support our football team and local food drive.”

AHSfuel wristbands will also be accepted as admittance to the game. Attending the Soup Scrimmage counts towards students earning activity tickets.

Head Coach Nick Ross said the upcoming scrimmage is  a good opportunity for players who haven’t spent a lot of time on the field to try to earn a varsity spot.  During the scrimmages, the coaches will be looking for players who are giving the best effort and really trying hard.  Ross is, “looking for guys who can play on friday night.”

According to Ross, the team’s been looking to their seniors for leadership. He said the leadership has been a good thing for the young team because the players are really going out and working hard.

Junior Travis Petersen said he’s “ready to play.”  Also, when asked the about the team, junior Casey Ihnen said, “We have potential.”  According to Ross, the scrimmage will show who’s ready to take the field when Trojans travel to Clarinda on Friday, Aug. 30, to face the Cardinals.
