Students help choreograph Show Choir Blast

By Josh Schorle

On Saturday, April 20, the Atlantic show choirs will perform their contest set as well as a brand new set for Show Choir Blast. The choir seniors will also be featured as they sing their final senior solos.

This year’s theme is “Music of the Decades.” The freshman girls (Treble Makers) will perform an 80s set, Diversity has a 90s theme, and Premiere will perform to modern songs. Saturday night’s performance will also feature a set choreographed and performed by the 2013 graduates.

This year’s Show Choir Blast sets are choreographed by choir director Jennifer Gaesser as well as a few students from each choir. Sophomore Grace Jacob, who is in Diversity, choreographed Diversity’s set and Premiere juniors Lisa Gearheart, Alexi Allen and Logan Hemphill choreographed the Premiere set.

Hemphill said, “I enjoy dancing in general so getting to come up with my own choreography was pretty fun.” He also added that some complications included “trying to make moves that would fit the song and coming up with moves in general because we don’t have as broad of a choreography library as [our contest choreographer].” Gearheart said one complication with creating choreography was the “difference between the real song and the choir version. I am more familiar with actual dance than show choir.”

Senior Danielle Lambert said, “I feel like we should have started earlier, but other than that, the choreography is great.”

Junior Savannah Whetstone said, “I think we should have started practicing a month ahead of schedule. The choreography is good and I appreciate that it is student oriented instead of being choreographed by a professional. It makes it more unique that way.”

Gearheart said, “Even though it was stressful, I think [the choreography] turned out well and I think it will be good for Show Choir Blast.”

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults. Activity tickets will also be accepted.
