By Lillie Zablocki, Sierra Smith and Emily Mitchell
On Monday, March 11, an administration change was approved by the Atlantic Community School Board.  The current activities director/ vice principal Josh Rasmussen will become the middle school principal.  The current Schuler elementary principal/curriculum director Matt Alexander will take over Rasmussen’s position at the high school.  The decision was called to attention for the board to vote on by Superindentidnet Michael Amstein.  The school board vote was four to one in favor of the change.

Rasmussen will take over the                                    Alexander will take the position as AHS athletic
position as AMS prinicipal.                                       director/ vice principal.

AHS Principal Heather McKay is “very excited for Mr. Rasmussen.” She thinks it will be a great opportunity for him to have his own building. McKay is “excited to work with Mr. Alexander because of all of his qualities and strengths.” In regard to the high school students, McKay said it’s “going to be a big change and they will have to build relationships with Mr. Alexander.” McKay will be doing her best to support both the administrators.

Athletic Director/Vice Principal Josh Rasmussen is excited for the oncoming change. “I wanted to have my own building. It’s always been one of my goals.” He said he won’t have to go to after-school activities as much, but still wants “to be a part of them.” He believes “things happen for a reason and I’m moving on to do something different.”

Schuler Elementary Principal/Curriculum Director Matt Alexander disagrees with the change for personal and family reasons, especially because of the evening demands that the athletic director/ vice principal position requires.  “With that being said, I will embrace this role because I am a professional administrator and the staff and students at AHS deserve nothing short of the best when it comes to academic and extra-curricular programs.”

Alexander knows that moving from elementary to secondary administration will be a big change within itself.  Alexander is prepared to work with teachers, coaches, sponsors, and students to “create an academic and extra-curricular environment where participants can showcase their pride in AHS both in and out of the classroom.”Superintendent Michael Amstein was the one who brought up the changes because of the resignation of AMS Principal Cam Smith. This has “created new opportunities and problems.”  Amstein said that as superintendent he has to look more at the bigger picture and ask what the district as a whole needs.  Amstein believes Rasmussen is very capable of filling the position as AMS principal.  Amstein said Alexander has background up at the high school and knows students, coaches, and the teaching staff.
Amstein said he hopes the change will be “as seamless as can be” but still believes that “nothing in life is permanent.”  Amstein concluded that this will be “two great opportunities for two great administrators.”
