Band members trying for honor band

e

On Saturday, Dec. 11, 36 Atlantic High School band students will travel to Red Oak to audition for the Southwest Iowa Bandmasters Association (SWIBA) Honor Band.

There are two sections of auditions, one for freshmen and sophomores, and separate auditions for juniors and seniors. Students auditioning must prepare one or two etudes, depending on grade level and instrument.

Scale fundamentals are an important factor in selection of honor band participants. Freshmen and sophomores must know scales with up to four sharps or flats. Juniors and seniors have to know all 15 major scales and perform one or two etudes.

Students auditioning for the ninth- and tenth-grade band are Tiffany Brauckman, Cassidy Elem, Caroline Trewet, and Kaley Miller on flute; Shelby Cooper, Hannah Jesperson, Haley Wright, and Mikayla Somers on clarinet; Matt Iekel and Cassie Hallman on French horn;  Preston Hoye and Wyatt Saeugling on alto saxophone; Steven Wright, Justin Elem and Paige Sorensen on trumpet; Matt Davidson and Tucker Sager on trombone; Tom Stinn on tuba; and J.T. Baker on baritone.

The 14 students auditioning for eleventh- and twelfth-grade honor band are Taylor Monson, Malachi Wickman, and Kari Sandage on flute; Alyssa Askeland and Joey Leinen on clarinet; Sam Johnson on French horn; Joann Kelly on alto sax; Amber Bishop on saxophone; Cody Ihnen on trombone; Aaron Johnson on tuba; Melanie Ehlert on timpani; Emily Hixon on snare drum; and Anne Chess and Katie Blake on mallets.

The 36 Atlantic students trying out will audition from 10:00 to 11:15.  Students that are taking the ACT that morning will carpool to Red Oak after testing and audition by 1:00.
